Methodology
Reading the Landscape
Every landscape tells a story, but not every story is immediately visible. Studio Oddscape combines terrain data, landscape interpretation and three-dimensional visualisation to reveal spatial relationships that are often difficult to recognise from conventional mapping or aerial photography alone. The process is designed to support understanding rather than simply produce attractive images. Every project follows the same broad principles while adapting to the characteristics of each landscape and the quality of the available data.
Defining the Study
Every project begins by identifying the landscape to be examined and the questions the terrain is expected to answer. The study area may be defined by a site boundary, river catchment, coastline, archaeological landscape, route corridor or wider topographic relationship. The intended audience and required outputs are established at the outset to ensure the work is appropriate to its purpose.
Selecting the Data
Suitable source datasets are reviewed before modelling begins. Depending on the project these may include LiDAR-derived Digital Terrain Models (DTMs), Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), bathymetric surveys, aerial photography, historic mapping, publicly available geospatial datasets and client-supplied survey information. Dataset resolution, coverage, coordinate systems and known limitations are assessed before processing begins. The highest available resolution is not always the most appropriate for the question being investigated.
Preparing the Terrain
The source data is prepared for interpretation. This may involve clipping study areas, mosaicking tiles, correcting voids, aligning datasets, integrating bathymetry or generating derived terrain products. Processing is deliberately conservative. The objective is to clarify the landscape without introducing artificial detail or obscuring uncertainty within the original data.
Interpreting Landform
Terrain is rarely understood through a single image. Different visualisations reveal different aspects of the same landscape. Hillshade emphasises form and shadow, colour elevation illustrates changes in height, Relative Elevation Models reveal subtle local variation, and three-dimensional terrain models provide a spatial understanding of enclosure, visibility, movement and topographic relationships. These visualisations are considered together rather than independently, allowing the landscape to be read from multiple perspectives.
Building Three-Dimensional Models
Where appropriate, the interpreted terrain is converted into interactive three-dimensional models suitable for web browsers, augmented reality and digital presentation. Model complexity, texture resolution and file formats are balanced to achieve efficient performance across a range of devices while preserving the essential characteristics of the landscape. Public web models are often simplified versions of higher-resolution archive or project models.
Quality Assurance
Every terrain study is reviewed before publication. Checks typically include source data integrity, spatial alignment, clipping accuracy, visual artefacts, terrain continuity, orientation, scale and consistency between published outputs. Where vertical exaggeration or interpretative visual techniques have been used, these form part of the visual methodology rather than representing unmodified survey data.
Publication
Completed studies may be presented as high-resolution terrain imagery, interactive web viewers, augmented reality models, presentation graphics, digital terrain models or Oddscape Place Reports. The chosen format depends on the purpose of the project and the needs of its intended audience.
A Note on Interpretation
Studio Oddscape produces interpretative visualisations derived from geospatial information. These outputs are intended to support understanding, communication and exploration of terrain. They do not replace topographic survey, engineering design, statutory mapping or site investigation where those are required.
